Chapter 36
1 These are the descendants of Esau, also known as Edom.
2 Esau married Canaanite women: Adah, daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah, granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite through her father Anah.
3 Bashemath, Ishmael’s daughter and Nebajoth’s sister.
4 Adah had Eliphaz for Esau; and Bashemath had Reuel.
5 Aholibamah had three sons named Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were Esau’s sons, born to him in Canaan.
6 Esau took his wives, sons, daughters, everyone in his house, his livestock, all his animals, and all his belongings, which he had in Canaan, and moved to another place, away from his brother Jacob.
7 Their wealth was too much for them to live together; the land where they were outsiders could not support them because of their livestock.
8 Esau lived in the Mount Seir area; Esau is also known as Edom.
9 These are the descendants of Esau, who was the ancestor of the Edomites in Mount Seir.
10 These are the names of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz, son of Adah, Esau’s wife, and Reuel, son of Bashemath, Esau’s wife.
11 Eliphaz’s sons were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
12 Timna was a secondary wife to Eliphaz, Esau’s son, and she gave birth to Amalek for Eliphaz. These were the sons of Adah, Esau’s wife.
13 Reuel’s sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Bashemath, Esau’s wife.
14 Aholibamah, daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon, was Esau’s wife. She had three sons for Esau: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.
15 These were chiefs of Esau’s sons: Eliphaz’s sons, Esau’s first son; Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz.
16 Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek: these are the chiefs from Eliphaz in Edom; these were Adah’s sons.
17 These are the sons of Reuel, Esau’s son: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, Chief Mizzah. These are the chiefs from Reuel in Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath, Esau’s wife.
18 These are the sons of Esau’s wife Aholibamah: leaders Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These leaders were Aholibamah’s sons, who was Anah’s daughter and Esau’s wife.
19 These are Esau’s sons, who is also known as Edom, and these are their chiefs.
20 These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who lived in the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, and Anah.
21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan were chiefs of the Horites, Seir’s descendants in Edom.
22 Lotan’s children were Hori and Hemam; Lotan’s sister was Timna.
23 Shobal’s children were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
24 These are Zibeon’s children: Ajah and Anah. Anah is the one who found the mules in the desert while taking care of his father Zibeon’s donkeys.
25 Anah’s children were Dishon and his daughter Aholibamah.
26 These are Dishon’s children: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.
27 Ezer’s children are Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.
28 Dishan’s children are Uz and Aran.
29 These are the chiefs from the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah.
30 Chief Dishon, chief Ezer, chief Dishan: these are the chiefs from the family of Hori, among the chiefs in the land of Seir.
31 These are the kings who ruled in Edom before any king ruled the Israelites.
32 Bela, Beor’s son, became king in Edom, and his city was called Dinhabah.
33 Bela died, and Jobab, Zerah’s son from Bozrah, became king after him.
34 Jobab died, and Husham from the land of Temani became king after him.
35 Husham died, and then Hadad, son of Bedad who defeated Midian in Moab’s field, became king. His city was called Avith.
36 Hadad died, and Samlah from Masrekah became king after him.
37 Samlah died, and Saul from Rehoboth near the river became king after him.
38 Saul died, and Baalhanan, Achbor’s son, became king after him.
39 Baalhanan, Achbor’s son, died, and Hadar became king after him. His city was called Pau, and his wife was Mehetabel, Matred’s daughter and Mezahab’s granddaughter.
40 Here are the names of the leaders from Esau’s family, organized by their groups and places: Leader Timnah, Leader Alvah, Leader Jetheth.
41 Duke Aholibamah, Duke Elah, Duke Pinon,
42 Duke Kenaz, Duke Teman, Duke Mibzar,
43 Chief Magdiel, chief Iram: these are the chiefs of Edom, living in the land they own: he is Esau, the ancestor of the Edomites.
